When Rebecca De Mornay, the chick from Risky Business gets cast as the mother of several adult children I need to apply for my AARP card. According to THR, the actress has signed on for the title role in the remake of Mother’s Day. The original film debuted in 1980 and became an underground horror classic for director Charles Kaufman.
The original Mother’s Day centered on two brothers who terrorize three female campers as a means to impress their mother. The more deviant and disturbing their acts the better. The new version will have the wicked family returning to the house where they grew up to terrorize the new owners and their guests. The brothers will be joined by a sister, who will be played by True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll.
Some of the unlucky house guests include Jamie King, Shawn Ashmore, Briana Evigan, and Alexa Vega. Rebecca De Mornay has played a psycho maternal character in earlier roles from her career, including the nanny from hell in The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. Mother’s Day director Darren Lynn Bousman pointed out the early nineties film as one of the reasons the actress landed the part.
“Every time you look at (Rebecca), she is on fire and to take her to this level, which is like her role in ‘Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ times a thousand, is exciting.” She is not some Freddy Krueger or Jason, so it was important for me to get a real actress.”
Shooting on Mother’s Day starts next month in Winnipeg. I wonder what De Mornay’s look will be for the film? In the original movie the mother looked like she was in her sixties. Are they going to age her, or just make her look like an incestuous hick? I wonder what will be their method of choice?
What do you think of Rebecca De Mornay being cast as the lead in Mother’s Day?
