In some contradicting film news, director Rob Zombie has been confirmed to helm the remake of 1958′s The Blob. According to Variety, the Halloween director will take on the horror classic, but will make some necessary tweaks to the story. We thought Zombie was done with remakes?
More on The Blob below…
“I’d like to do something different. If you look at what’s out there in general. All they want to do is re-makes. Every offer that comes to me is a re-make. They want to do re-makes, graphic novels…it’s hard to get something new through the pipe line.”
He’s obviously changed his tune, because according to the trade this deal is done. The original Blob centered on “an object from space that crashes into a field, containing a red blob-like substance that absorbs the humans it contacts and grows exponentially.” In Zombie’s vision for the film, the red goop has got to go.
“My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing — that’s the first thing I want to change,” Zombie said. “That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.”
I remember watching The Blob on VHS, for the first time last year. It starred a 28 year old Steve McQueen, and was deliciously campy. At the film’s core, it’s an old school science fiction piece involving humanity versus an alien force. In typical fifties fashion the “kids” were the only ones who could figure out the truth about the Blob. The movie was harmless fun, with PG material. Sources are saying that Zombie’s take will be a 30 million dollar, R-rated revamp. There goes the neighborhood.
