Remember the 1988 dark comedy Heathers? It starred Winona Ryder, and the it boy of the hour Christian Slater. The film became a cult classic among teens during the early nineties, especially after the film’s stars became overnight sensations. According to AICN, Heathers may latch on to another generation via the small screen. There are rumblings that a TV series is in the works.
Heathers will be adapted for television by Mark Rizzo and Sex and the City alum Jenny Bicks. Lakeshore Entertainment owns the rights to the film and will co-produce along with Sony Pictures TV. The plot for the series hasn’t been set in stone, but Rizzo will definitely include the characters J.D. (Slater), Veronica Sawyer (Ryder), and the “Heathers.” It’s been over 20 years since the film hit theaters so he has his work cut out for him.
The original Heathers centered on a group of girls who all shared the title name. They were a bitchy, but popular click that Veronica wanted to be a part of, but also despised. After she hooks up with J.D. a lot of the popular kids at her high school end up dead, and left with convenient suicide notes explaining why.
They’ve already adapted 10 Things I Hate About You for ABC Family, so I’m starting to see a theme here. I don’t know how they’ll rework it. Will someone die every episode? Will the entire run of the series focus on whether or not the killers get caught? That’s what they have to think about when tackling this story.
What do you think of a TV series based on Heathers?
