Mr. Mike Nichols is one of my favorite film directors. The man is beyond talented, and puts the class in his classic films. I’m happy to hear that he’s just signed on for another movie. According to Variety, Nichols will helm Deep Water, an eerie story about infidelity and murder. Yes, it sounds like an episode of Desperate Housewives, but believe me it’s not. More on the film below.
Deep Water will be based off of the 1957 Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name. It’s a story of “a couple in a loveless marriage hang on through an arrangement whereby the husband permits the wife to take lovers. Suspense builds as those lovers begin dying.” What happens to the lovers? Who knows! Fox 2000 will distribute the film, which will have a screenplay written by Joe Penhall.
This film will be in good company in terms of big screen adaptations. Highsmith also wrote the novels Strangers on a Train, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Deep Water has some “deep” shoes to fill, but with Nichols directing there’s no need to be worried. The man did The Graduate, Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood, and more recently Closer and Charlie Wilson’s War. It makes you wonder how he’s going to approach this story of slutty, killer spouses!
What do you think about Mike Nichols taking on Deep Water?
