I must have missed the memo that declared cancer and other terminal illnesses as hilarious. According to MTV, Seth Rogen will co-produce and star in the upcoming film, I’m With Cancer. Yep, you read that right. He states that the script for the film was written around the same time as Funny People, but is not a product of Judd Apatow.
According to Rogen, “’I’m with Cancer is a very personal story, about what happened to our friend for the most part,” Rogen explained of any tonal similarities to Funny People. So we didn’t really need much added insight into that. I was there with [Reiser] as he experienced a lot of it.” He’s referring to Will Reiser, a 25 year old comedy producer who found out he had the disease.
“I’m With Cancer” is very much fueled by Reiser’s voice –- and his struggle -– which Rogen said will ultimately make it feel quite different than Apatow’s new film. [Reiser] wrote the screenplay; he was definitely there with himself as he experienced all of it,” Rogen said of his friend’s story, which he hopes to start shooting sometime next year. “So I would say they’re pretty different movies.”
So, even though it would be easy to make Funny People comparisons, I’m With Cancer is rooted in some truth. I think the title of the film will shock people, but it sounds like there’s a good story underneath it. A lot of people like to focus on terminal illnesses that effect the elderly, but if you see someone from your generation dealing with it, it’s kind of unnerving.
