British actress Lucy Punch is tacking on another project to her ever expanding resume. According to THR, the actress is in final negotiations to star in the upcoming comedy Dinner for Schmucks. The film is a remake of the 1998 French film Le diner de cons (The Dinner Game), which was written and directed by Francis Veber. The English version will be helmed by Meet the Parents director, Jay Roach.
Punch will be joined by actors Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, who’ve previously worked together on The 40 Year Old Virgin and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes are producing the movie, which will be distributed by Paramount. In the original film, a wealthy man and his friends have a weekly competition where they attend a dinner party and bring the dumbest person they kind find as their guest. The newer version shares that similar plot.
I wonder who will play the self centered rich guy, and who will be the hapless jackass? I’m assuming Carell will play the half-wit, only because he’s really good at playing naive. If Rudd tried it, I think he would come off as intoxicated or high. I’m not sure what role Punch will play, but with such talent I’m sure they’ll find something worthwhile for her to do.
