Just hearing the name Jim Henson brings on the nostalgia. The company best known for their puppeteering genius has been picking up steam in the production department. Over at MTV they recently spoke to head honcho Brian Henson (son of Jim) about two highly anticipated properties, Fraggle Rock and the sequel to The Dark Crystal.
First off, Fraggle Rock is “still in very active development,” emphasis on very. He went on to say that the film has a very strong script, which is always a good sign. “It’ll have a strong musical component,” he said. “It’ll be expanded to an older audience.” When the show first came out it was primarily targeted towards the kiddies, and according to Henson the feature will expand to be more accessible to others.
As for the sequel to the 1982 film The Dark Crystal, he said “We have a ‘Dark Crystal’ sequel, called The Power of the Dark Crystal. It has a very strong script.” Once again, he lets us know the screenplay isn’t crap! “Both of those projects… are very close to going into pre-production,” Henson said. “They’re both really ready to go. [The studio is] just [in the process of] putting together the final finance pieces and the final distribution pieces.”
The one thing I wish they mentioned is the Jason Segel Muppet movie. Why is that movie on my must see list? Either way, I can’t wait to see a few Jim Henson projects back in the forefront. When I was a kid they used to do movies right. No one can deny their amazing take on A Christmas Carol. Those are the types of films that stick with you from childhood on up.
What do you think of the Fraggle Rock and Dark Crystal updates? Are you ready for a Jim Henson re-emergence?
