The cult Spanish language horror film, The Orphanage is getting an American makeover. The original 2007 film was directed by Guillermo del Toro protege Juan Antonio Bayona. According to THR, actor-director-producer Larry Fessenden has been hired to helm the English language adaptation of the film.

The film tells the story of a woman who returns to the orphanage where she grew up, only to learn that her son’s imaginary friend is the same one that terrified her when she was a child. The decision to choose Fessenden over various other directors was purposeful. He’d already made his mark in the horror genre with such films as Wendigo and The Last Winter.

According to the trade, “del Toro saw in him a filmmaker who understood the conventions of the horror genre and could execute a movie that would be as scary and disturbing as the original but in an American context.” I’ve heard of The Last Winter, but I’m not familiar with Wendigo. I trust del Toro’s judgement with this film. I believe he has a clear understanding of the horror genre, so he knows who can handle what.
