Is There a Sopranos Movie in the Works?
By Kara Stanford-Jones
It seems as if the speculation for a Sopranos movie is starting to get serious. A number of cast members have all stated that a screenplay is in the works! According to Cinemablend, Sopranos star Lorraine Bracco stated, “We’ve all talked to [series creator] David [Chase] to give him a kick in the booty to get [the screenplay] right.” She also clarified the rumors on whether or not James Gandolfini’s the one holding up the process.
“I don’t think it’s that at all…I think it’s really trying to get the right script. Without the right script, it’s really not worth doing.”
The Sopranos is one of those shows with die hard fans. There was a huge debate at the end of the series over the the way it concluded. No one knows exactly what happened, and many were happy to leave it that way. If they do decide to make a film, it will give answers to what it seemed like should be an un-answerable question and in a way do away with the brilliance in the series finale.
Although the film could translate fairly well to the big screen and the series is amazing — the way they left it, should be the way it’s left for all of time. I don’t know WHAT script would justify returning to the story, so it’s no wonder that the script is what’s holding everything up.
What do you think of this? Do you think they should take The Sopranos to the big screen?

This is nothing but that, speculation. David Chase & Gandolfini have both clearly stated, many times, they have no interest in a movie. They both strongly beleive what needed to be done is done and they won't, nor do they, to do the work for the money. Chase has moved on with HBO & Gandolfini is showing he's much more than Tony Soprano as an actor.

they should do a movie it would tie up lose ends and could also leave tony on a high point i would like to see tony running all of new york and jersey or atleast come out with a season 7 leving the audience in todays age i think is over rated

I just finished the series for the first time. It left you feeling like things were left hanging! But did it really. OK let's look at what happened. Leaving out the spoilers for those who have not watched it. You get an idea of what happes to the kids future. But what about the family. The mafia family. The war ends, and The Sopranos are left picking up the pieces. Does Tony go to court? We do not really know.
I got a better idea than a movie guys. We all want some more answers right. The old crew are mostly dead and their stories have been told. So what about A.J. Soprano, imagine his role developing into the mafia. Imagine a series that picks up a decade or two from now where A.J. is somewhere up the chain about where Chris left off. With a whole new crew. But through that series we get the answers to what the season finale left out.
I don't know about all of you, but I would watch that show every week!

Wow…I don't think I could stand a whole series revolving around AJ. He's a spineless idiot and because of that he would NEVER be believable as a ranking member. Whether it was intentional or unintentional the way that Chase progressed AJ's character left virtually no believable option to be able to work him into the "Family."
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 8:48PM
Hackramoni is right A.J is a pussy and Tony was ashamed of him…if i was the skip and A.J was my son i would'nt want him in the family

EWAVE, life often does not come with closure, a sad fact of life. However , get a grip on it and stop crying how you are "owed" closure to a brilliantly written and directed series. BTW, exactly what is it that you invested in the series, other than the time you spent enjoying 99.9% of the rest of the Soprano episodes? Are you this melodramatic in your personal life? Chill.
Sunday, December 6, 2009 3:10AM
Double Dummy, easy there. Chill!
Thursday, December 17, 2009 8:16PM
the finale was nothing more than a cowardly stupid ending. it was that way because the writers could not agree on a appropriate end to the series so they decided to leave it up to the audience. its not are job to imagine what happened, its our job to watch what happened. these writers get paid a lot of money and i want results
Sunday, December 20, 2009 8:12PM
I think if someone sat there, and thought it out, and made a 3 1/2 hour movie….. it could be GREAT, it could be glorious, but people think too much into art and what a movie "should have", who cares? who cares if it is ART the way they left the ending? IT WASNT GOOD! I WANT ANSWERS! I WANT A GOOD ENDING! I WANT SATISFACTION! I mean, it would be nice, and James Gandolfini will NEVER escape the Tony Soprano persona… he IS Tony Soprano, there isn't anyone else that could have played that part, and I'm almost 100% positive that will go down in his film career as his best acting.
Sunday, December 20, 2009 8:14PM
Oh yea, and your a dummy Tom, YES, I AM OWED CLOSURE, this isn't real life, it's a damn show, and the PURPOSE of this show is to satisfy my entertainment needs, and if it doesn't do that, what is the point of having the show? To annoy me? To get on my nerves? A satisfying ending is ALWAYS a good ending, maybe is ended good, maybe it ended bad, but if it was a SATISFYING ending, it was worth watching, if not, I just wasted an hour of my life….. can I get a refund?
Sunday, December 20, 2009 8:19PM
Lol, you READ the script? Amazing, maybe you could enlighten us then, because everyone says that the movie ain't gonna happen….. and why would they do a spin off on Tony's Dad? What are they going to do? Copy The Godfather? Lol, yea right, listen man, even if you DID read the script, you wouldn't be leaking it to a bunch of internet bloggers, the fuck for? To help US out? Lol, why don't you go to TMZ and tell them, you'll get about 250 g's, and since I told you about it, lemme get half lol.
Sunday, December 20, 2009 8:21PM
Whoa there Tom, don't be too much of a jackass……
Monday, December 21, 2009 12:28PM
Because I am self-ish I want the Movie, but if I am honest I think it would only take away from an amazing series with a truly refreshing ending.
Besides, "The King is dead. Long live the King"
Thursday, December 24, 2009 4:14PM
TONY GETS WACKED…..WALNUTS TAKES OVER AND RAMPAGES THROUGH NYC….WALNUTS WAS THE TRUE STAR ANYWAY ,MOST BELIEVABLE CHARACTER…….THEN A SPINOFF SERIES BACK ON HBO CALLED………………………………."W A L N U T S"
Friday, December 25, 2009 5:11PM
I dont think they should but I sure would like to see it.
Saturday, December 26, 2009 8:34PM
I pretty much agree with the two major viewpoints on either side. While I would love to watch more Sopranos, I'm not sure if it's justified. As it's already been said, the only way I think it can be done if it is using a really spectacular script. And the way this show ended makes that very difficult/unlikely.
Tuesday, December 29, 2009 4:15PM
big inside tip…my cousins friend is paulie walnuts right hand man and he told me that there will never be a movie..this is what i was told…big time let down for my self…..
Sunday, January 3, 2010 9:59AM
for the people left unsatisfied, you don't "get" it… maybe you should try watching sesame street, it's a little easier to "understand" for your type of mentality
Thursday, January 14, 2010 4:24AM
the more i watched the whole of the sopranos seasons the better i understood and appreciated the ending. id love it to return but as said before a great script is needed! i believe that chase can produce a good script. or maybe buscemi?
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 6:20AM
make a movie or dont make a movie. either way the show will always be remembered as truely epic, and fuck everyone who believes chase ended the show without concluding the story line. what more could he have to offer, the war amongst families escalated to an extent that close relatives and friends were being killed off by the ep. not too mention the death of phill who was the cause for the disputing families. chris was also killed off early in the 7th season leaving us shocked. this also shows that noone young is allegible to take tony's place, (including AJ whom chase never intented to take over.)
Saturday, February 6, 2010 8:46AM
The Sopranos is a work of art, I fully believe the story was told in full… why else stop after just 6 seasons? Sure there are tons of things they could do… but it's art- it is what it is and should be interpreted as such. It ended where it ended for a reason… the symbolism is enough to fill a book in the last scenes. Literally the leader of NY is 'beheaded'… plus the final scene… masterpiece.
I will say that I would watch a spin off story like with A.J or Tony's father even… but there should never be an actual prequel or a sequel to the Sopranos, it would be like redrawing the nose on the Mona Lisa or turning Versailles into a shopping mall.
Tuesday, February 9, 2010 3:43AM
ending was garbage … i just finished watching the enitre series for the 100th fuckin time and each time i get to the finale i get mad …. such a classic show but such a terrible ending … they gotta make a fuckin movie or bring the show back seriously … so many options
they can do a prequel like someone said and show johnny boy soprano (tonys dad ) and uncle junior running things . .. and flash back in forth to tony on trial …. they can start the movie from the final scene where meadow walks in the restaurant . He says carlo is gonna testify . . .they can do so many dope things
Saturday, February 13, 2010 8:13AM
Chase/ great writer..
James/ even better actor…
Sopranos movie/ Butt load of money and a following that would rival that of the God Father series!
Saturday, February 13, 2010 8:22AM
Guys just make the movie already, the fans are dying for a movie. Yes I am one of those fans I talk about, we will never think that James can only play Tony…he was just born for the role, and Chase we know you can write some great story lines. So what’s the hold up? The fans supported the show for 7 seasons don’t we deserve this after all isn’t this why you guys claim to do it for the fans…!.. Listen I don’t care if you do it for the money, woman, fame or whatever Hollywood is giving these days just make the movie can’t you guys see how much America has an infatuation with the Mafia particularly this Family we call the Sopranos. You could charge $20.00 dollars a ticket and make it in 3-D if you want we would never judge you we would still camp out for tickets just to see the family together again.
Sunday, February 14, 2010 11:29PM
Fuck i miss the Damn sopranos i never bee addicted to a series like that before pleasde please do a movie or a spinoff asomething even half way as good as the last one and i would be happy
Tuesday, February 16, 2010 3:47AM
It wasn't a cop out. It was an abrupt end that really couldn't have gone any further. No matter how that scene of Tony dying played out it would be a scene everyone would stop the DVD on right as it started to happened. It's kind of like how no one one really watches Scarface past a few minutes into the last battle. Sopranos ran at full throttle from start to finish without any lagging bullshit scenes after something intense happened. I think that was the reason David Chase decided to end the series finale the way he did. No offense but I do agree with the idea that David Chase didn't how you anything. His it's art and he's going to develop it as he chooses. It's sad we're going into a society where an audience dictates to the artist what he/she should put out.
Tuesday, February 16, 2010 4:27AM
word the best gangster tv series ever! watch it every day
Monday, February 22, 2010 3:21AM
My idea would be to put Meadow into a "calculating, ruthless Family position. Kind of like The Godfather , where Michael was the least expected successor to Vito.
Friday, February 26, 2010 12:15AM
i dont think anyone is a bigger fan than me. i would love to have some kind of satisfaction. i think a movie would be the bbest idea every , but they need to hurry before everyone ages .
Tuesday, March 2, 2010 4:36AM
I am making a spin off…. so watch this space!
Wednesday, March 10, 2010 10:12AM
i love the sopranos best god dam series ever you should make a movie.
Friday, March 12, 2010 4:05AM
I would like to give my simple analysis as to what happened. Please feel free to let me know what you think….The trajectory of the show was made clear from the very first episode when TS confided in Dr. Melfi that he was depressed and that "things are trending downward." Throughout the show T had to whack many of his lifelong friends/family. Also towards the end nearly his entire crew got whacked. Plus who didn't notice that Tony brought Paulie with him to talk to the fed? Don't you think Paulie, of all people, would have taken exception to Tony talking to the feds, regardless of the reason? My best guess is that Paulie sent that guy at the end of the final episode in to whack Tony and probably his whole family right there as they ate dinner in a takeover bid. It is logical. There was nobody left with any significant power who could take over the family and so Paulie would simply have assumed power by whacking Tony. Paulie had demonstrated a willingness to whack Tony earlier in the series when he was comiserating with Johnny Sack. He told Johnny that he would always do his best to keep the peace between their two families, regardless of whoever was in charge.
Friday, March 12, 2010 4:06AM
In the end though, regardless how you feel about them making a soprano movie, whether it is to finalize the show and tie up all the loose ends, or if it is a prequal to the series, we all have to admit that the show was a huge success, no matter if we were happy with the ending or not. Part of life is dealing with disappointment. In Braveheart, after Malcolm Wallace died and Uncle Argyle came to take young William away, young William said "I don't want to go." Uncle Argyle tells Wiliam "well you didn't want your Daddy to die either, but it happened." And that's just how i rationalize it to myself. I didn't want the show to end. I didn't want my grandmother to die. I didn't want to crash my car or break my ex-girlfriends heart, but it happened. We all just have to deal with the fact the Gandolfini simply will not reprise his role as Tony Soprano.
Thursday, March 18, 2010 9:05PM
To be honest i think the way it was left was Shockingly poor! The Soprano's is the Godfather of our age. A movie would be great but they have to do it right otherwise i would rather they leave it with that crapy fade to black!
I would also like to see Anthony Jr to get some balls and walk in his fathers footsteps to replace Chrisy now that would rock!
Friday, March 19, 2010 8:08PM
I agree with you AJ is a fuckin idiot who would get wacked the minute tony is gone. And he has the personality of a fuckin tree stump. I dont know how he even won the role of AJ with all the great young actors out there. Hey, maybe his mother gave dave some mean head. AJ as a mafia guy. Get fuckin real
Saturday, March 20, 2010 1:34AM
We didn't need to return to Gilligan's Island, Hazard, Kentucky with the Dukes, or Playton Place but we did only because it felt right to catch up. The Soprano's need to really be caught up with. It quickly became my favorite show.
Friday, March 26, 2010 8:46PM
I'd love to see the series, start right from where it left off….
I didn't like the end…
yes, it would be good, to see what happens in court, some time in jail… running the family from jail?… through a new member…. Meadow's boy friend….
I'd take another 10 years of the Sopranos.
Thursday, April 1, 2010 1:16PM
you sir are an idiot.
what is it with people feeling the need to make up such total and utter lies. you do nothing but embaress yourself. EVERYONE knows that you have not read a script so why pretend you have? just another child behind a keyboard making an idiot of themselves.
btw tony didnt die.
Sunday, April 11, 2010 10:24PM
I agree!!! A prequel won't miss.
Monday, April 19, 2010 7:21PM
Tony was eating Onion Rings, not a Canoli
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 2:02AM
I like the way the series ended because it's like a litmus test of your personality. What I mean is: if you think Tony lives, you're just as deluded as he was. The ending was designed as the final comment on the "everyone is right" culture we currently live in. That in fact has been the point of the whole show from the beginning. Tony starts having panic attacks and depression because he's a brutal, vicious, corrupt, manipulating, murdering scumbag who also happens to have a family. In order for him to get better he's got to choose between the good (his family life) and the bad(being a degenerate scumbag mobster). Except he doesn't see it like this. He wants to get rid of the depression while maintaining his mob life.
In life you have choices and you DON'T get to have your cake and eat it too, no matter how much we want to rationalize. At the beginning of the season when he's having all those dreams in the hospital that's a wakeup call to get out of the mob. But he doesn't listen. So he gets clipped. The way David Chase chose to end it is funny because it seems to leave room for debate, but what it actually does is separate those that remain as ignorant as Tony S from those that have been paying attention. So for those that have paid attention it's like the best ending, and for those that don't get it: get that sfooyadell' out of your fat mouth and stop being stunad! In my mind AJ eventually falls into the family business. Their whole family lives in perpetual delusion so this seems pretty logical to me. That would make a good series too.
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 7:24AM
The movie and 1 or 2 new seasons would be a great success, particulary financally. So please David Chase Take the offer, which is already on your desk and write!!! Dont be a grinch. Nobody really needs 10 Seasons of 24 or lost! But we need the sopranos!
Greetings from Germany – Tom
Saturday, May 8, 2010 10:14PM
I think a movie is the way forward to end this wonderful saga once and for all tie up all loose ends please
Monday, May 24, 2010 10:55AM
Remember Toy told his uncle he used to run NJ…. So he respected him so he did not hurt him..
Remember at the factory meeting the sit down , Where it was agreed to get the guy wacked, (the guy that got his head run over)….
there was no problem with Tonys crew doing anything wrong..
How ever I think the guys in the Dinner are Tonys "new Family" workers…
Sunday, June 13, 2010 5:53PM
Yes i so to then soom
Friday, June 18, 2010 6:24AM
I would love to see a Sopranos movie, but I have often wondered who would be in the movie? Alot of the characters were killed off in the family like Christopher and Adrianna and others. They could bring back Furio, but it would be interesting to see how they would tie these "whacked" characters into a movie.
Saturday, June 19, 2010 8:55PM
Lets get real, theres no way these greedy entertainment people are going to pass on the money they could make on a film. NO WAY! I'm sure there will be one.
Wednesday, June 30, 2010 1:10PM
I agree, I believe there is to much money to be made for Hollywood to NOT make a movie. Of course Seinfeld did not have a good ending and they never “gave in”. Gandolfini should recognize that his fan base loves him as an actor, he made his riches based on our devotion. I believe he and Chase owe the fan base a movie.
Wednesday, July 28, 2010 1:34PM
If a movie IS made, its GOT to be in the same format as GF2. Tony's fathers infancy and rise in a life of crime is a MUST, in order to understand Tony. Unlike GF2, tony's mother's roll in his upbringing will be a prominent issue. I am MUCH more interested in knowing the chracters PAST, than knowing their future. I am satisfied with my relationship to the characters AS IS. But I am DYING to know WHY they became the people the did………how Tony dies is of little interest to me, HOW he became the man is interests me greatly.
I hope that is the path Chase will choose…..
Wednesday, September 29, 2010 7:16AM
I’m not sure if they should make a movie,it could be a bomb and ruin the whole thing. But if they mad one I would be the first one in line to buy a ticket
Tuesday, December 21, 2010 9:37AM
Yes, Make the movie. I also want to see how Tony and the others rose to power, I agree with one of the earlier comments that like godfather 2, it would be interesting to see Tonys father and Uncle Junior when they were younger and built the family business. I would also like to see present day sequences with AJ and Furio coming back into the picture and whatever else the writers think of. I along with millions of other HBO viewers would love a Sopranos movie. About 3 hours long would be nice.
Monday, January 24, 2011 10:04AM
The movie needs to go back to when all of the characters were in their late teens and early 20' and how they came to be. Then it should transition into right before the beginning of the series that started 10 years ago. This would allow the ending of the series to stay as is with us not knowing what really happened. This would of course mean a whole new set of young unknown actors coming out to play the gang. Then in the last thirty minutes, bring in the cast from the series to finish out the movie.
Wednesday, January 26, 2011 9:04PM
cant keep watching my dvd over and over, please make some thing, or bring it back, or some kind show
know one owes anything, but the fan sure would love something,
Friday, January 28, 2011 2:26PM
AJ's character was the hardest to watch during the series. The crying and bitching was too much to bear. He should have been whacked and Meadow take over the family business….that would work.
Wednesday, February 16, 2011 12:25PM
Really Sex and the City gets 2 movies??? The Sopranos definetly deserves a movie…we the viewers deserve a movie….Just fkn do it..now..
Saturday, March 5, 2011 6:29PM
Well, I certainly agree it would be great to have a Sopranos movie, but as to some of the posts that say we as fans are "owed a movie" that's a bit much. After all the uproar to make an X-files movie, they not only made one bomb, but two! Sometimes it's just better to leave well enough alone. I do like the idea of a prequel , it might just work. Ahhh.. but then we'd miss the cast we loved so much. Whatdyado..?
Friday, April 22, 2011 11:34AM
my sister in law in brooklyn said that there are movie people all over her street in brooklyn. I kind of thought it was a sequal to the soprano's. I just love that program and hope they bring it back for awhile.
Monday, August 15, 2011 11:06AM
i'm waiting for a Sopranos movie, I watch the re-runs all the time, I don't won't nobody in the immediate Soprano family to die.:)
Sunday, September 11, 2011 8:10PM
we need a movie. we r die hard fans. I even named my frist child Meadow!!! It would do very well. come on sex and the city got 2 movies dont know why there had to be even one but there is. Sopranos became a part of peoples lives for years.
Monday, February 13, 2012 9:16AM
There should definately be a sopranos movie for one it was the best show ever made and it could be made into one hell of a movie. another thing even if it's not good people will still go to see is just because it's the sopranos, so if you want a great movie make it the sopranos and "forget about it."
Thursday, March 1, 2012 3:07PM
Yes yes. Still got Paulie,Syl,Furio,Carmela etc.Tony may not have died, maybe Meadow or AJ gets killed and Tony lived.Tony still has to screw his doctor .Bring it on.

ggggh
Wednesday, May 16, 2012 12:21PM
There are plenty of characters to move forward Besides the main ones of Tony,Carm, Meadow, and AJ.
Paulie,Silvio(will recover),Patsie, Carlo,Benny,Jason,Lil Carmine ,Lil Pauly,Janice, Artie,Melfi,Junior,(New York) Butchies new crew could be great He first needs to be clipped out of Boardwalk Empire. It can easliy be set where it starts in a dream sequence in Holstons. One of the original endings Chase has it was the scene with Tony sweeping leaves by the pool, it can easily restrat there where he has another panic attack which led to the scene in holstons and on we go——————
