Personally, I don't give a damn about any film that's an origin story. I understand the monetary reasons why studios do this, but they don't understand that people don't pay to see Peter Parker or Duke try and figure out how to be awesome. We don't give a shit about Bruce Wayne crying about his dead parents and fine tuning his gadgets. We want to see Batman kicking ass. We want to see Spiderman webbing through buildings and Cobra Commander going head-to-head with a honed Duke. We want to see well-oiled machines doing what they do best--which is the source of our childhood memories and the only reason we give a damn about seeing this shit. The sooner they stop making origin story movies, the sooner Hollywood will get a better return on their investments and regain the respect of the public.

GI Joe looks like ass because it IS ass and the only thing that would prevent that is if it weren't an origin story. Batman Begins is the exception to the rule despite itself (the casting and performances made it good, nothing else--with the exception of Holmes, who is gross in everything). But Hollywood is filled with mouth-breathing fools who continue to green light idiotic fare that either misses the point like a blind leprous prostitute or abuses it...like...well, a blind leprous prostitute.

Fascinating that this film has been the recipient of such negative buzz. Makes me wonder if these are paid bashers, losers with a personal vendetta, or perhaps even the film's producers trying to temper expectations.... Personally, I never expected some serious, epic, military film and if I get something along the lines of the mummy mixed with the fond memories of my childhood I'll be satisfied.
