If the name Robert Schwentke sounds vaguely familiar to you it’s probably because he’s the man behind the Eric Bana, Rachel McAdams project, The Time Traveler’s Wife. After completing that film the busy helmer has had more than enough options thrown his way. According to THR, Schwentke is circling the upcoming Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman thriller, Red. The film is produced by Summit Entertainment (they’re everywhere), and is based off of the WildStorm/DC Comic.
Nothing has been set in stone, but the trade is reporting that Schwentke is in close negotiations to direct the film. The story of Red centers on “a former black-ops agent forced out of retirement when a high-tech assassin threatens him and his girlfriend.” Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian will be on board as producers for the film, which is tentatively scheduled for a 2010 release.
Schwentke is a German director who has worked on such films as Tattoo and Flightplan. I’m not one to pigeon hold anybody so I can’t really pass judgement on this guy based on those few films. There are plenty of directors who’ve embarked on vastly different types of movies than what they were accustomed to, and the outcome turned out to be amazing. Plus, Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis are in this movie, that’s all I need to purchase my ticket.
What do you think about Robert Schwentke directing Red? Are you a fan of the comic?
