The DVD Releases are running lean and mean this week as there is only one new feature film hitting the shelves (The Haunting in Connecticut) and ZERO special editions.
Luckily, there’s plenty of good TV on DVD making its DVD debut, and, of course, the three worst DVDs of the week!
TV ON DVD
“Mad Men”: Season 2
Has there been a more acclaimed, hyped and discussed who that nobody watches than “Mad Men.” Maybe, “The Wire,” but everybody sort of acknowledged the fact that nobody as watching that HBO masterpiece. With “Mad Men,” it’s difference. Critics seem to think everybody is zeroed in on this brilliant piece of sixties nostalgia. Sadly, that isn’t close to true.
But now we have season 2 on DVD. Now the uninitiated can prep for a third season poised to feature such milestones as the Kennedy Assassination and the first time Don Draper’s hair moves.
So buy the DVD. You really should catch up.
“The State”: The Complete Series
There was a time when MTV was not only the home to great music videos, it also featured cutting-edge comedy.
No show was more out there than “The State,” a painfully hip take on sketch from such luminaries as Michael Ian Black and Thomas Lennon. Where else could you get sketches like “Porcupine Racetrack” and “Monkey Torture.”. Only here.
Fans have already pre-ordered the DVD. But those who are uninitiated should buy it right now.
“GI Joe”: Season 1
Ah, product tie-ins. Normally they are so so bad, but in the case of this one, so so good. That’s because we finally get one of the great 80s classics on DVD thanks to the impending release of the inevitably awful GI Jose: The Rise of Cobra.
Back on the small screen are Duke, Destro, Baronness, Snake Eyes, Sgt. Slaughter and, of course, Cobra Commander in all his high-pitched snarling glory.
So buy the DVD set. Probably more fun and more excitement in one 22-minute installment of this series than there will be in the entirety of the upcoming movie.

Horrible Straight-To-DVD Release of the Week
Three terrible movies, three new DVDs. Which is the worst? Cast your vote and tell the world!
The nominees are:
The Case to Vote for It: It didn’t take very long, but somebody’s already rushed out the David Carradine death DVD. Okay, it’s not really a death DVD, but is there any chance this movie about a hitman simply named “The Man” would’ve come out of hiding if not for the death of the legendary “Kung Fu” star? Shameless.
The Case to Vote for It: Shouldn’t a film about the love triangle of legendary poet Dylan Thomas featuring Keira Knightley and Siena Miller as his pair of love interests be Oscar bait? Shouldn’t it at least be one of those early-year counterprogramming releases like The Other Boleyn Girl? Instead it goes straight to DVD? How horrible can this movie be!? Plus, it features the ridiculously bad tagline: “The only thing more dangerous than war is love.”
The Case to Vote for It: Everybody probably woke up this morning and thought to themselves, “Y’know. I really wish somebody would make a ‘Van Wilder’ flick without Ryan Reynolds. Better yet, that movie should go straight to DVD, just like that awesome string of ‘American Pie’ sequels.” Oh wait. Replace the word “everybody” with “nobody” in that sentence and you have an accurate statement.
