Ryan Reynolds is The Green Lantern!!!!

Picture 24 Ryan Reynolds is The Green Lantern!!!!

It’s official! Over at Variety they are reporting that Ryan Reynolds has beat out Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake for the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming comic adaptation, Green Lantern. Yesterday and today has been filled with speculation over who will be the one to land the coveted role, and finally a decision has been made.

Green Lantern is based off of the DC Comics character of the same name. The film will be directed by Martin Campbell, and produced and distributed by Warner Brothers. The news just broke that Reynolds will star as the ringed hero, making this another superhero notch on the actor’s belt. Green Lantern will be released on June 17, 2011, which is the same year the X-Men Deadpool spin-off should make it’s debut.

First of all, thank God Justin Timberlake did not land this role. If he did, I would have lost all respect for Warner Bros, and everyone else involved. Second, I was kind of leaning towards Bradley Cooper. I actually wanted the studio to go with an unknown, but if they had to choose, Bradley was my pick. I think Reynolds has the physical look for the character, but I think playing Deadpool may add some confusion for the fans. He’s made the jump from Marvel to DC from his roles as Hannibal King (Blade Trinity) to Wade Wilson (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) to Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern.

Reynolds has also been considered the prime candidate to play another DC Comics character The Flash, which has a live action adaptation still in development. How many heroes can this man play? I would much rather see him stick with Deadpool.

What do you think about Ryan Reynolds being cast as the Green Lantern? Do you think his multiple comic book portrayals will overwhelm fans?

I agree that Bradley Cooper may have been a better choice, mostly because I think Reynold would have been an incredible Wally West.

Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool, no one else. This is TERRIBLE news, yet another movie NOT to look forward to.

Good for him. Honestly, i don't care if he lands the part playing Michael Jackson, as long as we still get a Deadpool Movie. I know so little about Green Lantern so i can't comment on who would have played him best, but i would have loved to have seen Nathan Fillion.

This is awesome news. As a Green Lantern fan boy, i cant wait for this movie to start filming and every little tid-bit and news ("Ryan Reynolds eats toast and jam on the set of Green Lantern") come out.

I have always been a fan of his and like the direction he is going with in his next few roles. He has a serious drama in the works and now a big action movie. He really is stepping up his game and making a real name for himself.

I don't think any of the actors they were looking at should be playing GL. (If you can call Timberlake an actor…) Ryan Reynolds is one of my top 3 favorite actors. He's funny as hell. Even as Hannibal King in Blade he just had to be funny. Hal Jordan is NOT funny. He's about as straight foward and corny as can be. A true blue golden age Super Hero. (Like Superman) If Reynolds pulls this off then he is truly a great actor. But I definately think he is more "suited" for Deadpool (the merc with a mouth). But as an actor, if I had to be known for a super hero role I would want it to be one of the big ones. Deadpool has a small fan base. (great comic though!) Green Lantern? Well GL is HUGE. I can understand Ryan's career choice here… He would make a great Flash though for sure… (that is, Wally West Flash…)

As a long time fan of the comic I feel that the choice of Ryan Reynolds was not a sound decision. The character and mythos of the Hal Jordan/Green Lantern superhero is one that is maked with very serious undertones and a depth that most actors cannot portray. While I enjoy Ryan in most of his movies one thing is clear, he does not fit the bill. Physically he will look good in the costume, but as most fans of GL will agree, he is more suited to a younger role. If the movie had been based on the Kyle Rayner/Green Lantern character I feel that Ryan would have been perfect, but as Hal Jordan I think that he will be somewhat of a disappointment to the die-hard comic fans. I understand the studio's want to have a big name play the title role, but this is a case where a "no-name actor" would have been a much better choice. Additionally Ryan has already established himself as Deadpool in the Wolverine movie and soon to be spin-off. I personally hate it when one actor/actress does crossover roles within the comic field (i.e. Halle Berry as Storm and Catwoman).
