Yet again, Hollywood is killing our childhood. Scooby-Doo director Raja Gosnell has signed on to direct Smurfs, a live action/animated movie starring the popular small blue characters created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo, says Reuters.

Gosnell is best known for directing Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, as well as last year’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua – films that put live actors and animated talking animals together on the big screen — How’s that for a skill?

No plot details have been said on Smurfs, but the story will likely feature the well-loved blue characters such as Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the villainous Gargamel.

The film is set to be released in 3-D on December 17, 2010.

Who actually wants to see the Smurfs on the big screen?

Dear God no. I was able to enjoy the Scooby-Doo films, despite initially being irritated, but there's a series that has survived a half-dozen 'remakes' and is still going strong. The Smurfs weren't very substantial; they're well-loved and memorable, but as far as storylines go, they never had much happening. However they fill an hour and a half with Smurfy Smurfness, it's going to be terrible. I'd put more stock in the potential enjoyability of a movie-length "Jem".
