Patton Oswalt is taking a walk on the dramatic side with first time director Robert Siegel‘s film about, you guessed it, a big fan. Only, he’s not just any big fan, he finds himself being beaten up by his favorite player and then suing him for $77 million. For those of you who don’t remember Siegel was the brains (aka the writer) behind Darren Aronofsky‘s film, The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke and also a former editor for The Onion. Sounds like he’s got the smarts and the ability to pull off an amazing film.

Although you might be thinking that this could be going in a comedic direction due to Oswalt lead in the film, audiences at Sundance were amazed to see such a dark and dramatic performance from the comedian and the trailer below really gives us a sneak peek into what we can expect from both the actor and the director.

This might be to Oswalt’s what Punch Drunk Love was to Adam Sandler. It’s odd seeing him so serious and in such pain, but so far so good.

What do you think? Are you ready to have Oswalt make you cry?

The film will be in theaters on August 28, 2009
