It looks like we’re going back in time to where it all began. The highly anticipated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action reboot has been confirmed for months, and has some powerhouse producers behind it. One of them being Scott Mednick who previously worked on 300 and Superman Returns. According to Screenrant, Mednick recently spoke about the direction the new franchise will go in regarding it’s well known character mythology.
We are intent on re-telling the origin, as it was in Batman, as it was in Superman, frankly as it was in Spider-Man, to tell the origin story. We have an entire new generation of fans who really don’t know the full back story. You have a much more sophisticated audience [nowadays]. Even the younger kids are more sophisticated by the information they receive. Things have become a little darker and a little edgier, just in general. Certainly as filmmakers the technology has come so far. It really gives us an opportunity to revisit the material and come at it, hopefully, in a new dramatic way, from a filmmaking standpoint, and honor the old, and bring in the new.
Mednick went on to say that Ninja Turtles will be more than just guys in suits. He wants them to have personalities of their own and exhibit real teenage behavior. In my opinion, when restarting any hero franchise the origin story is always the safest way to go,especially when the source material is decades old.
I think the real obstacle with this is going to be the suits. The older films were from the early nineties and featured martial artists in what looked like foam turtle suits. For the time it was campy and fun, but if their trying to take this into a more sophisticated direction how are they going to jump that hurdle? I’m on the fence with this movie. There’s a part of me that really wants to see where they can go with it using today’s technology, and then there’s another part of me that’s terrified as to what they’ll actually do.
How do you feel about the TMNT reboot using an origin story?
