Michael Bay‘s Transformers Revenge of the Fallen now holds the record for best outcome on opening day grossing in $60.6 million on its debut day at a national level. The previous box office champ was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which grossed $44.2 million when it opened on a Wednesday in July of 2007.

These numbers make the Paramount sequel the second best of all time after The Dark Knight, which grossed $67.2 million on its Friday opening night. But the Transformers success is sailing over seas as well; The film opened early over the weekend grossing $19.6 million from 833 runs to top the international B.O. chart for the weekend.

In Britain the film grossed over $14 million from 517 locations to come within 3% of the opening of The Dark Knight, however Transformers outbid the original Transformers by 71% and Spider Man by 18%. So if you thought the Michael Bay, Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox hype was over, let me just tell you that it’s not and it won’t be for a while.

The sequel is breaking box office record everywhere; estimates show that Transformers will gross in between $150 million-$170 million nationally, over its first five-day run. The first Transformers was able to pull in more than $708 million worldwide on lifetime grosses, but it seems like this successful sequel will outshine its own this time.

Will it be able to keep up it’s momentum?
