They did call it the most anticipated sequel since the first debut of Michael Bay’s 2007 Transformers, apparently they were right! The film has only been available for 12 hours and it is already breaking box office records. Moviegoers all over went in to the first midnight screenings on Tuesday night bringing in $16 million.

This puts the Paramount Transformers sequel right up there with Fox’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith which grossed $16.9 million on it’s opening night back in 2005 and The Dark Knight which holds the ultimate opening night record with an impressive $18.5 million last summer.

But like I said, Bay’s new Transformers is breaking records on the big screen, and I mean big screen: Imax reported that all 160 locations sold out their midnights shows picking up over $1 million, which tops the $675,000 that The Dark Knight picked up in midnight Imax screenings.

Will Transformers set the record and top The Dark Knight this weekend? What do you think?

Do you think that Tranformers 2 will make more money opening weekend than The Dark Knight?
