Sigourney Weaver Joins the Cast of Paul
By Adrian G
Attention sci-fi and comedy geeks: be on the lookout Sigourney Weaver in Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s upcoming comedy Paul and just to make it that much better, it sounds like she’ll be joining the cast Alien-style.
It was rumored a whole ago that Weaver was considering the role in the film but, has just been reported that Weaver has signed on to play Tara, a role which will hopefully tap into and reference her character Ripley from the Alien films. Blythe Danner (both Fockers films) and Joe Lo Truglio (“Reno 911″) have also signed on to join the already amazing cast which includes Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman (as a governmental official, presumably out to stop whatever hijinks Frost and Pegg are up to), Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, and Seth Rogen (as the voice of the alien Paul).
Directed by Greg Mottola (Adventureland), and written by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (the geniuses behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz), Paul is the story of two British science-fiction geeks who take a trip to the US, with the intention of getting to Area 51.
Needless to say, this movie sounds like it will be a massive hit. Based on who is at the helm of the picture, it should be safe to assume the film will be hilarious as well. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are admittedly huge sci-fi fans (one need only look into their British sitcom Spaced for numerous Star Wars-inspired bits), and this sounds like their attempt to get in with the Judd Apatow gang in the US. Hot Fuzz was a modest hit here in the States, and Pegg’s follow-up How to Lose Friends and Alienate People barely left a mark on US audiences.
It makes sense, then, that they are involving themselves now with the likes of Rogen, Mottola, Hader, and the rest of the people involved in this film. Hopefully, this film will garner Simon Pegg and Nick Frost even more attention and accolades, as they are nowhere near as big here as they are across the pond.
Based on the information available now, Paul looks to be a highlight of the 2010 movie year in terms of comedies.
What do you think? Are you excited for Paul?
