brunocohen Poll: Is Bruno Harmful to the GLBT Community?

There is a very fine line between satire and just being plain ol’ offensive. We all know that Sacha Baron Cohen loves to walk that line and will be doing so in Bruno. But, is this the right time to be possibly offending a community that is already having to fight for their rights? It has recently been reported by TheWrap that the film may be having to go through a series of re-shoots and editing in order to make the film more gay friendly. But in doing so, they may destroy some of the satire-power that the film has, which could help the cause.

Even though I have yet to see the film, there is no doubt in my mind that Bruno’s antics will not only shed light, but aggressively mock and tear apart homophobia. Yet, if certain audiences don’t understand that the film is a satire they might end up supporting the wrong cause. Part of me wants to say “f*ck the people who don’t get it” but the other side of me thinks that we can’t afford to have more ignorance spread in a time where people are having to fight for their rights.

My suggestion is that if you don’t understand what satire is you should be banned from this movie. In fact you should be banned from this planet and shipped to Mars.

Check out what some celebs have to say about the film below…

    ah this is crap.

Ali G, Bruno, Borat were all around LONG before the movies were. (sacha had a show for god sakes featuring the characters).

but once it comes to American all of a sudden it's new and dangerous.

If people 'dont get it' why would they see the movie? If they dont understand it's a comedy and satire i'm sure they're already homophobic/prejudiced/bigoted therefore this movie will have no effect in changing or reinforcing their opinions.

I saw 'Bruno' and 'The Hangover' in one night.
The latter was worse for negative gay stereotypes, and it was MUCH worse in the way it treated a baby.
Bruno's scene with the baby in the hot tub was photoshopped. Hangover's scene with one of the men pumping a little baby's arm to simulate masturbation was real. Both movies were chockfull of laffs, though.
