First Trailer for Shutter Island
By Mali Elfman
The trailer for Martin Scorsese‘s new thriller (they’re calling it a drama), Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio alongside Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Emily Mortimer, Max von Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, and Patricia Clarkson has just been released and it’s quite surprising. I don’t want to take anything away from you seeing it for the first time, so I’ll just leave it at that and talk about it more after the jump.
Watch the trailer below…
To be honest, the new trailer got sent to us last night, but due to some issues with our site we couldn’t post it until now. At least it’s in HD now!
Is it just me or does this seem like they have taken a script that almost any upcoming horror director would have used, added Scorsese and DiCaprio, and are now making this film seem like it is more than it is? Hopefully it’s more along the lines of The Others than The Ring, but at the moment it’s hard to tell.
Official Synopsis: Drama is set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island.
I’m calling this a thriller because at the moment, that is all I see. Perhaps they’re just marketing this film towards the broadest audience possible, but at the moment this is closer to a horror film than a drama. Yes the shots are gorgeous but is the material worth it? From this trailer it looks like it’s not, but I’m guessing it’s just a poor representation of the film. Many of my favorite films have no been able to be captured in a 3 minutes advertisement for the film, maybe this is just another one to add to the list.
The film is based off of Dennis Lehane’s (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone) novel and was adapted by Laeta Kalogridis (Alexander, Pathfinder). Hopefully Lehane had a heavy hand in the adaptation, if so, than I’m completely wrong and this has the potential to live up to the Scorsese standard.
I do love how EVERY shot is filled with amazing actors. The crazy guy in the cell is Jackie Earle Haley who you might remember as Rorscach in The Watchmen. Emily Mortimer is the crazy girl who has gone missing. Even the guards are well known faces.
One thing is for sure, Scorsese can pull in an amazing cast. But will it be worth it?
What do you think so far?

Here's what I think, whoever wrote this crappy review needs an editor… "Many of my favorite films have no been able to be "… I mean c'mon, i can't his review serious.
