This was horrible news to wake up to. Remember the rumblings from a while back about a remake of the 1980′s sci-fi comedy, Short Circuit? According to Empire, the film is getting closer and closer to becoming a reality. A screenwriter has been hired to pen the script and it’s Dan Milano. As in Dan Milano of Cartoon Network’s Robot Chicken!
The 1986 original film starred eighties darlings Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy as a young scientist and a hippie. It also featured Fisher Stevens as an Indian guy, yeah that was him in that role. The remake will be produced by David Foster for Dimension Films, and he seems ecstatic about bringing the lovable robot back to the big screen.
“We’re bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals.”
He also went on to compare the robot to Wall-E. They do share an odd resemblance don’t you think?
“We think of Wall-Eas an extended trailer for our film, because it’s the same face,” said Foster. Milano, meanwhile is charged with ensuring an edgier remake.
In my opinion Short Circuit is one of those films that were made during the right decade due to its subject matter and delivery. Don’t get me wrong, I love Dan Milano and Robot Chicken (that show is hilarious), but I don’t know if I’d be interested in this remake, regardless of who’s behind it.
What do you think of Dan Milano rewriting Short Circuit?
