It was just announced that Natalie Portman would be joining James Franco and Danny McBride in the upcoming comedy Your Highness direct by David Gordon Green, but we didn’t need to hear it from them, because we heard it straight from McBride himself plus a whole lot more! They’re taking the film very seriously. They’re even considering casting someone along the lines of Sir Ian McKellen as the wizard! Apparently, aside from Portman, Franco, and McBride they’re going for an entirely English cast to make the film look real.

Find out more about the tone of the film, McBride’s character, who is directing, casting and more below…

What’s going on with Your Highness?

We’re actually do that right now, I just came from Belfast, that’s where we’re doing it. That’s shaping up really nice. We snagged Natalie Portman this week. So right now it’s Franco, Natalie Portman, and myself, and we’re looking to lock the rest of the cast down in the next week or so. It’s looking like it’s going to be a rally crazy movie. The sets being built and they are all huge and crazy. I have to learn how to ride a horse and swing a sword starting next week.

Is it right that this is sort of a stoner- medieval comedy?

It’s not really stoner. It’s stoner as much as The Lord of the Rings books were for that culture. I mean, if you’re stoned you’d probably get a kick of watching this. My character he’s a lazy, second born prince who knows he’s now going to be anything so he just sort of fucks off all of the time and smokes a little bit of the Wizard’s grass. It’s not centered around smoking. It’s like two brothers, Franco’s my oldest brother and he’s like an action star, he’s amazing everyone loves him. His fiance gets kidnapped by this Wizard and we have to go on the road and save her. It’s that like a classic sort of quest tale with a kind of fucked up view on it. There’s everything from stop motion creatures on it, crazy CG creatures, puppets like in dark crystal, it’s a wide variety of things that we’re pulling from.

Are you enjoying the fantasy aspect in the film?

We don’t want it to be a spoof at all so it’s just kind of inspired by those things, but it has it’s own kind of tone.

You mentioned a wizard in the film, have you ever thought about a classic actor like Sir Ian McKellen or anyone like that?

There were thoughts of someone in that realm. David’s been over in London casting. For the most part aside from Natalie, Franco and myself we’re going for a totally British cast and not necessarily comedians. We want the world to feel like it is a fantasy movie, it is serious, and then the comedy just comes from [the fact that] this is the last dude that belongs in this world. So that caliber of actor is something we would be interested in to make it feel like it’s real.

What do you think of Your Highness so far? Awesome comedy or ridiculous spoof?
