Tom Cruise and his Vanilla Sky co-star Cameron Diaz are reuniting for another film. According to Variety, the actors will star in the James Mangold project, Wichita. Unlike the previous film they were featured in Wichita is a comedy, an action comedy! Cruise has been courting the project for a while, and is finally in advanced negotiations to star.
Diaz and Cruise have both approved the script for the film which has gone through several rewrites since it’s initial draft. In Wichita, “Cruise will play a secret agent who pops in and out of the life of a single woman.” Although, it seems as if this film may finally be getting off the ground, neither actors are sitting around waiting for it.
This is just one of the many projects that Cruise has his eye on. He is currently interested in the Len Wiseman thriller Motorcade, and the Spyglass remake of The Tourist. Diaz is currently developing the romantic comedy Swingles, which she will co-star alongside Zack Braff.
No official release date has been set, but Wichita is eying a summer 2010 debut, that is if it ever gets going.
Even though Cruise had a small role in last year’s Tropic Thunder, this will be my first time seeing him headline a comedy. It is still unclear if he has the comedy chops to carry the film. Some sources are speculating that this film might have a Mr. and Mrs. Smith feel to it, which would mean he could be more Pitt and less Stiller like, but I’m still having a hard time picturing it. It’s one thing to dance around in a fat suit as Tom Cruise, it’s another to lead the way.
What do you think about Cruise and Diaz reuniting for a Wichita?
