Do you ever watch the special commentaries on your DVDs? Now there is a way to watch a movie in theaters with the director’s commentary. I don’t think I’ve heard of anybody doing this, but the director of The Brothers Bloom, Rian Johnson, recorded a special track to watch with the movie via your iPod.

All you need to do is download the podcast for your iPhone or music player, and you are good to go. In case you don’t know what to do with it, the commentary tells you when to pause and start the podcast.

The podcast is fairly long and in-depth. As the director says, “do not listen to this the first time you go see the movie! It will be far too distracting. “The commentary is actually pretty interesting; Johnson talks about where it was filmed, various stylistic elements and camera tricks used, and problems they encountered while filming the movie. You really could listen to the commentary at another time, after you have watched the film. Granted, the idea of going to a movie theater with an iPod or iPhones to listen to director commentary, is not for everyone.

The Brothers Bloom is currently out in a limited amount of theaters. It is expanding this week, and will go nationwide on May 29.

Will you be listening to Johnson at the theater?

This idea was original of Kevin Smith, he wanted to do the same for Clerks 2, but at the end he thought it was a stupid idea, I agree with him.

Kevin Smith was going to do this for Clerks 2 but the exhibitors threatened to pull the film if this went ahead as they felt it would be too distracting and annoying for those just watching the film having people in the cinema listening to their iPods at the same time. Which it would be.
