Finally!! The lead role has been cast for Kenneth Branagh’s live action adaptation of Thor. According to NikkeFinke, 25 year old Australian native Chris Hemsworth has landed the coveted role of the Norse god. The actor isn’t well known in the States but has done a sizable amount of work down under. If his face looks vaguely familiar to you, it may be because he starred as George Kirk, the father of James in last weeks number movie, Star Trek.

This has been a pretty productive year for Hemsworth’s career. He’s landed roles in Joss Whedon’s upcoming horror film Cabin in the Woods, and he will star as the lead in the Red Dawn remake. Thor will be a major tent-pole project that will be intertwined with several other Marvel superhero properties including Iron Man 2, Captain America, and The Avengers. Hemsworth beat out several actors for the role of Thor including Kevin McKidd, Alexander Skarsgard, and Charlie Hunnam. Thor will hit theaters on May 20, 2011, following the release of Iron Man 2 next year.

I haven’t seen anything extensive from this guy so I don’t know what to say about his casting. Some people thought his performance in Star Trek was a bit green, but maybe by the time Thor shoots he will have improved. I’m happy he’s an unknown, that way viewers can go into the film looking at the character and not the persona of the actor playing him. I think he’ll do good.

What do you think of the new Thor? Do you think Hemsworth has what it takes to play the Marvel superhero?
