Why can’t Hollywood just let sleeping dogs lie? Everything has to be a possible franchise, remake, reboot, or remix these days! According to /Film, there were rumors spinning around about whether or not Steven Spielberg and actress Drew Barrymore were teaming up for an E.T.: The Extraterrestrial II. A statement that even looks ridiculous when I type it. Last month the director guest edited the 20th anniversary edition of Empire Magazine, and answered letters sent in by various celebrities. One of them had a question from actress Eva Mendes who wondered if an E.T. sequel was happening, and if it was she “would fight Drew Barrymore for a part in it!”

Check out Spielberg’s answer and info on the Cliffhanger remake after the jump.

Spielberg replied to the E.T. question with this very direct response:

“Eva doesn’t have to worry about about with Drew because I’m never going to make E.T. II — E.T. is a closed story. It had a beginning, middle, and a definite ending, and we had nowhere to take it except to go home with him. Nor did I want to bring him back to Earth for a second time.”

As for another piece of disturbing news, the Sylvester Stallone arctic thriller Cliffhanger is up for a reboot. That’s right people, over at LatinoReview they’re reporting that StudioCanal and the LA based Original Pictures are teaming up to make snow covered rock climbing awesome again! The film’s producer Neal Moritz has high hopes for the property and compared it to another rebooted franchise, Star Trek!

“Just as they rebooted ‘Star Trek,’ we’re going to do the same with ‘Cliffhanger,’” said Moritz, who will produce. Unlike the original, where Italy stood in for the Colorado Rockies, the new redo looks set to feature multiple cliff-face locations.

Cliffhanger and Star Trek on the same level?! What is this guy on? Someone needs to air out the fumes in his office because their effecting his common sense. The original Cliffhanger was full of thrills and chills (no pun intended), but bordered on the ridiculous. I can’t remember the last time I watched it, but I know I was pretty young and even then I noticed something wasn’t right with Stallone climbing iced out rocks, in a tank top and biker shorts! It was probably five degree’s outside but he just had to show those muscles.

If I had to choose between the two, I wouldn’t. Unfortunately Cliffhanger seems to be a done deal. They’re looking to start filming sometime next year, and the producer’s are currently looking for a screenwriter.

Which would be worse E.T. II, or a Cliffhanger remake?
