The success of Fast & Furious has invigorated the careers of it stars just as the original did eight years ago. First, Vin Diesel signed on to star in the video game adaptation The Wheelman, and now Paul Walker is ready to tackle his next project. According to THR, Walker is in talks to star in the action drama Protection. No, the movie isn’t about condoms but it is about a familiar subject that we know all too well, vigilante justice! Due to the unexpected success of Liam Neeson’s Taken, Protection has become one of the many films that is trying to copy it’s winning formula.

Protection is about a 21 year old woman who is forced to live a life on the run after she witnesses the murder of her family by the mob. She must move from place to place with the aid of an agent who is assigned to protect her. They carefully tread the Mexican and U.S. border to outrun the gangsters, who want the woman killed. Simon West, who helmed Lara Croft : Tomb Raider and Con Air is in talks to direct. The project is currently being shopped around the Croisette at the Cannes Film Festival.

Taken was a sleeper hit and I’m not surprised that producers want to emulate it’s success. But Protection sounds like a B movie in every sense of the word. B movies aren’t all horrible, sub-par films that need to be shunned by the general public, there are some out there that are legitimate classics. With that being said, a good actor can make a B movie somewhat tolerable. Paul Walker’s acting isn’t the best in my book, it’s similar to Keanu Reeves in terms of his constant “surfer guy” delivery. I dug his performance in Running Scared and that’s probably because he didn’t sound like himself. I’m going to need him to step outside the box, to make this one work.

What do you think of Paul Walker replicating a Liam Neeson role?
