We can all let out a sigh of relief knowing that the cult classic Conan the Barabarian will NOT be left in the hands of director, Brett Ratner. Ever since last year, rumors have had Ratner at the helm to reboot the Conan franchise even though there was no real confirmation that he would. Over at Empire, the film’s producer Joe Gatta officially set the record straight and let us in on what’s really going on between Ratner and the film.

It appears that Ratner can’t be the director of Conan, because according to the producer their still looking for one.

“We’re currently in the process of hiring a director,” he told us. “For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn’t work. But you never know what can happen.”

There’s that old fashioned “scheduling conflict” excuse rearing it’s ugly head again. No matter what the reason, I’m happy that they’ve decided to move on.

“We have a potential start-date on Conan of August 24. And we’ll be shooting in Bulgaria. I would say though the emphasis is on Conan [rather than Red Sonja]. It’s our crown jewel here at the company and that will be the leader. Red Sonja probably won’t happen until next year, as far as making it goes. So we want to launch Conan and reinvent the franchise.”

Gatta is referring to the Red Sonja project that Robert Rodriguez will direct, with Rose McGowan starring as Sonja. Unfortunately, no actor has been officially cast in the role of Conan, which I find a bit unnerving. They expect to start filming in a little over three months and the lead character hasn’t even been cast? According to Gatta “We’ll have an open casting call: as soon as we hire our director the search is on.” That’s a little too close for comfort in my opinion. Maybe this is why movies have been sucking as of late. The lack of original ideas and the inability to properly coordinate a film production?

Who else could direct Conan the Barbarian? Do you think they should have made it work with Ratner?
