Lately the buzz regarding director/producer Robert Rodriguez has been surrounding his Sin City sequel, and his reboot of the Predator franchise. Yet, all is quiet when it comes to his adaptation of the 1960′s film Barbarella. In his version actress Rose McGowan would be taking over for Jane Fonda who starred as the heroine in the original. So what’s happening? Apparently nothing, according to MTV Rodriguez himself confirmed that the adaptation was dead in the water.
Rodriguez spoke to the website and gave a breakdown of the problems surrounding the Barbarella project. One major and common issue was financing. Universal Pictures was on board a few years ago, but they quickly changed their tune once the film’s budget surpassed the 80 million dollar mark.
“It came to the point where [a company from] Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie,” Rodriguez told MTV News. “But I had to shoot it in Germany and post it in Germany. Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, ‘God, I don’t know if we can do that. I don’t know if I can be away that long.’”
Rodriguez put a lot of work and effort into revamping the character, so naturally he’s disappointed that it didn’t work out.
“It was a real bummer,” he admitted. “We had all this artwork and screen tests of what it would look like. It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy—almost like that [1981 animated] movie, ‘Heavy Metal’—version of a ‘Star Wars’ movie. Something that no one ever could get to see. It was gonna be really great.”
Well there it is, no Barbarella for us. Even though this film appears to be finito, I’m surprised there hasn’t been any mention of his Red Sonja project? The remake of the 1980′s action flick that will once again feature Rose McGowan as the lead. In my opinion, I’d rather see a remake of Red Sonja than Barbarella any day. What about you?
Should Rodriguez try to bring back Barbarella or move on to something else?
