Ugly Betty star America Ferrera will be stepping away from the innocent, naive role that she plays on TV to star in an independent drama. According to THR, the Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress will star in a war drama entitled, The Dry Land. The feature will be the directorial debut for Ryan Piers Williams, who also wrote the film’s screenplay.

The Dry Land, which was previously known as American Tragic, tells the story of a U.S. soldier who returns home after a tour of duty. Upon his return he has difficulty adapting to his former small town lifestyle. The soldier will be played by Ryan O’Nan, and Ferrera will star as his wife. The rest of the cast includes Academy Award nominee Melissa Leo, Jason Ritter, and former That 70′s Show star Wilmer Valderrama. Leo will play the soldier’s mother, Valderrama will star as his army buddy, and Ritter will portray the guy who watched over his wife while he was gone. I think we all know what that means.

Is it just me or do you smell Stop-Loss mixed with Born on the Fourth of July with this movie? I think there are several types of films that we will never see the end of and this is one of them. The war inspired drama, or the war epic. I’m happy to see Valderrama trying to do something different. For a while there I didn’t know where his acting career was going. Seeing Ferrera as someone’s wife will take a small adjustment on my part being that I’m only used to seeing her going frantic over a missing pair of magical pants.

What do you think of the cast for The Dry Land?
