I used to think Superman was the only one faster than speeding bullet, but apparently I was wrong. Twentieth Century Fox has wasted no time setting up another X-Men film for development. In less than 24 hours after the announcement that Hugh Jackman would return for a Wolverine sequel, the studio has begun working on the Deadpool spin-off. According to THR, the film is in development and has Ryan Reynolds attached to reprise the role.
A Deadpool movie shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone since his character has been the center of solo speculation from the very beginning. Even though Wade Wilson aka Deadpool only appears in a few scenes in X-Men Origins: Wolverine he made enough of an impression to get his own film. Most fans of the character were rightfully upset with his depiction in Wolverine, because it greatly deviated from the character’s original persona. This makes me weary of any future plans they may have for him. The producers and the studio have a lot of making up to do.
Considered the “merc with a mouth,” Deadpool is a highly skilled mercenary who is known for his sarcasm as well as his martial arts. In the comics the character is severely disfigured and wears a red and black suit from head to toe. He is also known for breaking the fourth wall while in character. He would speak directly to the reader in the middle of a comic panel and then resume with the storyline. I don’t know if they will feature that aspect the character or his full on suit, but it would be a good way to redeem him in my eyes.
The film will once again be produced by Marvel, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Fox, which automatically puts it on my crap watch radar.
Do you think they can redeem Deadpool after his portrayal in Wolverine?
