The Goonies Cast Members Talk Sequel at Reunion

david hall the goonies sequel The Goonies Cast Members Talk Sequel at Reunion

If there’s one movie that film buffs would love to see  a sequel for while simultaneously condemning its creation, it’s The Goonies. And maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance.

The entire cast, along with director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg, reunited in Hollywood On March 17, 2009 for the first time in 20 years, and wouldn’t you know it, a few of ‘em expressed interest in a sequel. For their 20th anniversary issue, Empire magazine just released a video from the interview and photo shoot on their website today that shows The Goonies crew bantering about the possibilities. But should the chatter be taken seriously? Take a look at what some cast members said below the jump and decide for yourself…

Richard Donner: ”We tried for a long time. Steven and I had many meetings with writers but nothing stuck. It seemed disrespectful.”

Corey Feldman: “So I guess the answer about the sequel is that there’s always hope.”

Donner: “No. No hope.”

Sean Astin: “A year from now, ten years from now, 50 years from now, I’m absolutely convinced there’ll be one. We’ll figure it out. A sequel could be great. It could be shitty. You never know. But the original is the thing it is and no-one can ever change it.”

OK. So for the most part, this sounds like a big joke, but Spielberg is known to work cinematic wonders, and with a little makeup and some creative plot development, a sequel could happen. Maybe it could take an angle like Hook (1991′s  Peter Pan sequel starring Robin Williams) where the children of the original characters pick up the story where it left off.  The Goonies ‘never say die’, and they haven’t said ‘no sequel’ yet either, so keep your fingers crossed.

What do you think? Would a sequel to The Goonies spell disaster? Would you go to see it?

Good or bad, I've been waiting for a sequal to this movie ever since I saw the pirate One Eyed Willy's ship float out to sea for the very first time! Hollywood makes sequels to the WORST movies, why not one of the best adventure films of all time?

Actually I was about to trash the idea until you came up with the children of the Goonies aspect. A sequel would definitely never recreate the magic of the first, but like you said, Spielberg's a wizard, so I'd be interested.

Personally, I don't think a sequel would work (especially not with all the shitty writers that are working for all the major studios, now, and are writing the scripts for the sequels/remakes that are already out there!). And I shudder to think of the children that would probably be chosen to fill the roles of the original Goonies' kids (God forbid that Miley Cyrus should ever be considered! *shudders*). Nothing will ever compare to the original movie!

I think it would have to be dark. Like, Sean Astin's character (or maybe one of the others) has spent the last 20 years of his life trying to find that ship and he's gone a little crazy. Somehow he talks the others into going on a Indy Jones / Lara Croft / National Treasure style … maybe one of them stays behind and relays info from the house in the original. I think it could work but it would have to be an adult story for the adults who loved it as kids. It would have to have grown with the original audience. It would have to feel more dangerous and less fantastical. Less innocent.

I thin any sequel needs to be done with the fullest respect for the original. Steven Spielberg is a master of his art and I think a sequel would do better than the Indiana Jones sequels. As long as they don't make more than one more.

I would definitely go see it! Trusting in Spielberg that they would do a great job at it!

A sequel to this classic is not needed nor could ever live up to any expectation I would have for it! I totally agree that there are few writters in Hollywood that could do the sequel justice.

It might make a pretty penny though if done with any decensy
