Another notable actor has joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood adaptation. According to THR, Academy Award winner William Hurt has just signed on to co-star in the film. I will admit I was a bit surprised to hear about his casting since they’ve already begun production over in the U.K. Either way, Hurt will join fellow Oscar winner’s Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett who co-star as Robin Hood and Maid Marian respectively.

Hurt will play William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke. He’s based on an actual historical figure who carried heavy influence throughout Europe. Not only was he a man of political esteem, but he was also considered one of the best jousters of his era. At that time jousting was a popular form of sport equal to what basketball is in the U.S., or soccer in South America.
Robin Hood, which is the film’s unofficial title, will be a retelling of the origin surrounding it’s major characters. Brian Grazier and his Imagine banner will co-produce alongside Scott. This film is turning into a real must see. I was a little apprehensive about it at first, but it’s starting to grow on me. Robin Hood is set for release on May 14, 2010.
