What the hell is Commissioner Gordon doing hanging out with Tony Stark?! It’s blasphemy I say, blasphemy! Yesterday we reported that comedian Garry Shandling joined the cast of Iron Man 2 as Senator Stern. He has been seen on set in full costume in a shirt and tie, looking very political. For the most part people thought he would be starring as Stark’s father Howard, a role which was originally attached to Tim Robbins. Now, according to RopeofSilicon that honor may be going to Gary Oldman!

Sources are reporting that Oldman has joined the cast of Iron Man 2, with the potential to star opposite Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark’s dad, Howard. These are the same sources that announced Shandling joined the cast, which turned out to be true. Even though they’re adamant about Oldman’s role as the senior Stark, they also pointed out that Mad Men co-star John Slattery has also been linked to the role. Oldman has been seen on set so we’re assuming he’s not just there chatting it up with the cast.

Iron Man has only been filming for a couple of days and there are already casting mix ups left and right. Why has them film been cursed with all this uncertainty? I love Gary Oldman, but I feel weird about him being anywhere near this film. It’s a Marvel vs. DC kind of a thing. It doesn’t sit right with me. It has nothing to do with his talent, because the man has it in spades but still. If he is Howard Stark, that gives a good 8 year age difference between him and RDJ. Oh, the magic of cinema!

Do you think it’s a good idea for Oldman to join the cast of Iron Man, or would it be awkward?
