Finally some information regarding George Lucas‘ long awaited Tuskegee Airmen pic Red Tails has come to the forefront. The film has been in development for what seems like a lifetime, but progress has been made and the cast is now filled. Red Tails will follow the trials and tribulations of the first African American aerial combat unit during WWII. According to IGN the cast will include several talented up and comers as well as established actors whom will be led by Oscar winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Terrence Howard.

The cast will also feature Emmy winner Bryan Cranston, Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Cliff Smith a.k.a. Method Man, Kevin Phillips, Rick Otto, Lee Tergesen, Andre Royo , Grammy award winner Ne-Yo, Elijah Kelley, Marcus T. Paulk, Leslie Odom Jr., Michael B. Jordan, Grammy nominated singer Jazmine Sullivan, Edwina Finley, Daniela Ruah, and Stacie Davis.

Five of these actors mentioned all starred on the HBO series The Wire. I was wondering what that was all about until I noticed the film’s director was Anthony Hemingway who worked on both The Wire and Battlestar Galactica. Lucas will executive produce the film which he says has been two decades in the making.

“I’ve been wanting to do Red Tails for 20 years, and we’ve finally got the means to showcase the skill of the Tuskegee pilots,” said Lucas. “We’re working on techniques which will give us the first true look at the aerial dogfighting of the era. And our top-notch cast will really make this story special.”

“I’m thrilled to have such a fantastic cast of actors and such a talented director to work with,” said McCallum. “The story of the Tuskegee Airmen represents a milestone in American history, and we’re all proud to be paying tribute to their heroic efforts. That cultural significance is not lost on anyone in this great young cast.”

I was a huge fan of the TV movie Tuskegee Airmen which premiered in the ’90′s and also starred Gooding in a lead role. I think with Lucas behind this film people will take notice and give the story of these men a second look. Granted I was a bit skeptical since the guy is primarily known for his fantastical features, but I’m willing to give him a chance.

Do you think Lucas will do a good job with Red Tails? What do you think of the cast?
