Fans of Spiderman have made no secret of their resentment towards the last installment of the webslinger’s franchise. Spiderman 3 was a commercial success but a critical failure. Much of the film’s story and dialogue bordered on corny, and made for a truly frightening viewing experience. Director Sam Raimi wants fans to know that he is aware of the faults from the last film, and he plans to do better on the next. According to ComingSoon, Raimi recently gave a status update on Spiderman 4, as well as some info on what went wrong with 3.

Raimi says that the script for Spiderman 4 will be done by this summer due to the May 6, 2011 release date set by Sony.

“We have to make the release date, and on all of these pictures, the ‘Spider-Man’ films–and I’m sure it’s the same as with many of the other bigger-budgeted films–they have release dates far in advance of a screenplay,” he said. “So it’s about getting it ready the best you can in time for the first day of production. That’s what we’ve always done, and that’s what we’ll try to do again.”

As for the abomination that was Spiderman 3, Raimi told Empire that he wasn’t fully responsible for it’s outcome. His involvement was limited as compared to the previous two films.

“They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually,” he said. “But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn’t really have creative control, so to speak.”

Since Raimi is getting back into old habits he plans on giving the fourth installment his all. He must enjoy making franchise films that go beyond the trilogy point such as his upcoming Evil Dead 4 project.

“The best way for me to move forward on films, is that I’ve got to be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film. I love Spider-Man so much that I’d like to continue telling Spider-Man stories. But only under those circumstances where I think I can honour him.”

Do we believe him? I really hope that Raimi keeps his word and does “honor” the character. Spiderman’s been through the wringer and my last experience with him was not a pleasant one.

Do you think Raimi can fix what’s been broken? Can Spiderman be brought back to his former glory?
