Remember that scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall when there was a muppet-vampire musical and you peed yourself out of sheer joy? Well, good news! Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller are rumored to be bringing the Muppets back into our sad, sad lives, with a Muppets film. According to Aint It Cool News, a the duo has written a first version of the script and have been sending it around.

I cannot contain my excitement, even if this a rumor. I’m going to go ahead and assume that this movie will get made because if it does it will most likely be the finest cinematic experience of our lifetime. Check out more details on the script below…

For the moment project has been titled “The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time,” and according to rumors, it follows a fairly simple formula. The Muppets reunite to save the Muppet Studio, and in order to do so they must get 10 million viewers to watch their show. If they cannot accomplish this, a greedy Texan will be taking their studio.

The Great Gonzo over at AIC reported:

It’s obvious that Segel and Stoller really have a lot of love for the Muppets so the characters all feel pretty spot-on. It’s funny and silly, just as the Muppets should be. All the classic characters are in there: Kermit, Piggy, Rowlf, Gonzo, Fozzie, Animal, The Electric Mayhem, Sam Eagle, Swedish Chef, Bunson and Beaker, Sweetums… etc.

They obviously worked really hard to include everyone. Interestingly, the only post-Jim Henson Muppet to appear in the script is Pepe. He has all of 3 lines so it feels as if they thought “well, we have to have him in there because he’s popular but we don’t have to give him much time”. There are some reverent nods to The Muppet Show and the first 3 movies that really displays the writers’ respect for Jim Henson’s work. There are a lot of great cameos scripted as well. Of course, we’ll see if they can actually get all the celebrities they want to, but it would be nice. It is a musical which, for me, is a plus and hopefully they’ll be able to churn out some songs as memorable as we had in the original 3 Muppet movies.

What’s not so good?

There are patches in the script that still feel kind of flat. They need some punching up. The script also includes a lot of spoofs, which is to be expected. But some of them are already incredibly outdated, or will be in 6 months (MINOR SPOILER- there’s a short scene written with cameos from Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau that is a spoof of Swingers. Swingers?!?!?!? I love that movie but it is 13 years old! No one is going to get this).

And apparently there will be a cameo made by Christian Bale in full Batman costume, but I think they’re starting to REALLY push it with that one.

Oh, and did I mention that it’s a musical?!

I might not have needed to, but there you have it. So far it seems to be a rumor (and a far-fetched one at that), but it’s a possibility. If there is any truth to this, it probably won’t be coming out for another few years, considering that Jason Segel is currently busy with other projects including Gulliver’s Travels and Despicable Me.

Almighty Muppet God!!! Hear our prayer for a new Muppet Musical!
