Super producer/director JJ Abrams will be making the jump from science fiction to crime thriller with his next project according to Variety. Paramount has acquired the rights to an upcoming Wired magazine article about a group of Italian diamond thieves. That’s right people, they don’t just adapt books anymore. Articles, notes, anything that’s not nailed down can get turned into a movie. Abrams will be producing the film through his popular Bad Robot production company, while Paramount will distribute.
Joshua Davis is the author of the upcoming article that is featured in the April issue of magazine. Labeled “the untold story of the world’s biggest diamond heist,” the story centers on Leonardo Notarbartolo. The man who was suspected then sentenced to ten years in prison for being the ring leader of a group of thieves who made off with over 100 million dollars worth of goods from the Antwerp Diamond Center. Notarbartolo was sentenced in 2003, but was released earlier this week. The strangest element in all this is the fact that the stolen stash has never been reclaimed. How Spike Lee, Inside Man is that?
This actually sounds pretty good. If Abrams is just producing, who will be directing? I think he did a decent job with Alias and Mission Impossible 3. This sounds like something he could handle.
What do you think of JJ Abrams latest project? Would you see it? Yay or nay?
