Holy 1980′s action series! Hollywood’s destroying another television classic by bringing it to the big screen. According to THR, our favorite and most resourceful hero is getting his own feature film. MacGyver, the popular sci-fi, action series that aired from 1985 to 1992 is getting adapted by New Line. The series starred Richard Dean Anderson in the title role as a secret agent, who was known for his ability to get out of tough situations. Raffaella De Laurentiis will produce the project via her Raffaella Prods. along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff.

Since the cancellation of the series in the early nineties, there have been two made for TV movies for MacGyver. Both faired rather well, and cemented the character’s place in pop culture. This feature film adaptation doesn’t have a writer attached, but according to New Line’s Richard Brener that wont be a problem for long. ” “We think we’re a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise.”

What A-lister would dare step into the shoes of MacGyver? This isn’t exactly Charlies’s Angels or Starsky and Hutch. How can they make this good, without it being campy? I’m always weary about these so-called television remakes, they always come across as corny in some way. If its a comedy it could work, but if they make it a drama I think they may have a problem. We all saw what happened with the 2006 version of Miami Vice. It tried so hard to be serious, which hurt the film in the end. This is a hard one to call, what would MacGyver do?
