It looks like Keira Knightley has outgrown her pirate past and won’t be returning to the the Pirates franchise for another film to play Elizabeth Swann – But was it her choice or the stuidos?
Recently she told Moviefone, they that, “It was a completely fantastic experience, and it was an amazingly large portion of my life, but I don’t think I need to go there again. I think that it’s done. But I’m very excited to see the next one.” Yet, Disney stated earlier that they were canning her role. It sounds like she’s moved on, made her money, and is focusing on more serious roles now, but is she just covering up the fact that they didn’t ask her to come back?
Here is how I see it, there are two ways of looking at this:
A. Very few people are able to take a career that started with such a huge mega-picture and turn it around into a solid acting career. As much as I hate to admit it, Knightley has done just that. At first I saw her as a pouting pretty girl who ran around on screen, but in her recent work in Atonement and The Duchess, Knightley has proved that she is far more than just that, she’s a solid actress. That mixed with the fact that the last Pirates movie was a disaster, I believe that she would want to jump ship before it sinks.
B. According to Cinematical over a year ago, Disney said that they were remaking the series to focus on their main star “Captain Jack adventures” and supposedly the film would “toss the Elizabeth and Will characters over the side in favor of doing a bawdy buddy picture which would star Jack Sparrow and Barbossa. Where both captains of the Black Pearl would initially be competing for the exact same prize.” So, there is the possibility that she was never offered any role at all and is just taking the high road.
I’m going to go with the first option A, and say that she rised above Pirates. What do you think?
