Well, we know now that it did indeed tank. Something like $105 million in revenue for a film that cost $120-150 million to make, not including the sizeable marketing campaign. I doubt the DVD sales will pull it to break-even status, but even then, it's fair to call it a box-office disappointment.

Why did this happen? Well, I'm going to go against the grain of Mr. Brown's 5 Reasons, and say, "None of the above." The REAL reason Watchmen bombed? It's just not a work that lends itself to a sub-three-hour movie format. The graphic novel is simply too long, and too nuanced, to be covered in one film.

Ironically, the director who was offered this project BEFORE Zack Snyder, Guillermo del Toro, understood this. He said at the time that he saw Watchmen as more mini-series material, rather than a movie.

And he was right.

During the Great depression, one of the industry's that thrived was the motion picture industry. So throw out number 1

I don't think this movie will bomb at the box office. There's plenty of hardcore Watchmen fans out there, that will see it just out of curiosity, doesn't matter how much they'll hate it. There's also the crowd of people who saw "From the Director of 300", and they thought "that movie was cool, this will be cool as well" . Also, there's nothing else opening this friday, or at least nothing interesting, so Watchmen will definitely be number 1 at the box office, I think it might do well over 50$ million. Check my website for a great interview with Alan Moore, if you're a fan, I highly recommend it.

reason 4. and 3. are not really relevant i think, because shows like Heroes didn't have any "real stars" as well as characters not well known, and we still went crazy for it...

#1 really isn't an issue, cinema has always seen rise in sales during economic crises. Hell, the movie industry in America pretty much started with the Great Depression. People need an escape, which is why video game sales are doing fine as well.

actually no. 4 and 3 are the biggest reasons this film will flop. It doesn't matter if people are broke. People are still flocking to the cinema... remember the surprise hit PAUL BLART: MALL COP?

Yeah, I'm sure this movie is going to flop really badly, but I think it'll become an underground cult hit, like The Fight Club.
