Whatever Lola wants. Lola gets. And little man, little Lola wants you! Those are a few lines from the popular song featured in the Broadway and film musical Damn Yankees. According to Variety, Jake Gyllenhaal will be finding out what Lola wants soon enough. The actor has been tapped to star in the musical. Yep, Damn Yankees is getting remade, and Gyllenhaal is in talks to star as the film’s lead, Joe Byrd. This will be the Academy Award nominated actors first musical, but he’s not the only star making his debut in the genre.
Jim Carrey will also co-star in Damn Yankees as the Devil himself. Yep, the Devil is an actual character in the movie. If you’ve never seen the film or read the play here is a rundown of what the story’s all about.
“Damn Yankees,” which bowed on Broadway in 1955 and won seven Tony Awards, focuses on Joe Boyd, a happily married middle-aged man whose devotion to a hapless pro baseball team prompts him to make a Faustian bargain with the devil to help the team. He’s transformed into slugger Joe Hardy, in exchange for Boyd’s soul. Boyd can break the deal, but the deadline occurs during the World Series. For good measure, the devil engages Lola, a gorgeous lost soul, to seduce the slugger and seal his fate.
Why does it seem to me that they would get someone like Beyonce Knowles to play Lola just because? She seems to be the go to girl for musicals these days. The original Damn Yankees starred fifties heart throb Tab Hunter as Joe, and Gwen Verdon as Lola. This new version will be produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the same guys that brought you 2007′s Hairspray. The script is being written by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel.
I think Gyllenhaal and Carrey are both talented actors, so I don’t have any doubt that they can pull off a musical. I’ve seen worse try and succeed. My question is, who’s going to beat the original choreography of Bob Fosse? You can’t outdo Fosse!
How do you feel about the new Damn Yankees?
