The action-packed screenplay, originally drafted by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris and then rewritten by Brian Helgeland, tells of the origins of Robin of Loxley while drawing from the historical facts of the time period. Abandoned as a child, Robin finds solace among the common people of Nottingham. Trust issues stemming from his abandonment make it difficult for him to fall in love. That is, until he encounters Marian.
Sounds like it’s focused on the love story aspect, but Scott and Crowe worked together before on the blockbuster hit Gladiator, and with a $130 million dollar budget (way to go Universal!), we can expect some explosive chemistry from them. But Blanchett, new to the mix, could be a wild card. However, her character is said to be “a strong, independent woman,” and Blanchett is known to play these types well, so hopefully we’ll get to see her as impassioned as she was when she starred in 1998′s Elizabeth.
At any rate, I think Blanchett is a better choice than Sienna Miller, who was rumored for the role last year. Personally, I’m still a fan of 1991′s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (admit it, Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman are a badass duo), so I’m setting the bar high for Nottingham.
What do you think of Cate Blanchett cast as Maid Marian in Nottingham? Will she be able to bring new life to the character?
