With the release of the new Friday the 13th set to hit  theaters this weekend, New Line Cinema has fast tracked the production process for their revamp of Nightmare on Elm Street. According to THR, the studio has found a director for the project, and could start principal photography as early as this spring. Samuel Bayer has been attached to direct, and will be making his feature film debut with the remake.

More on Bayer after the jump.

Bayer is best known for his work in commercials and music videos.

Those videos include Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Blind Melon’s “No Rain,” featuring the famous girl in a bumblebee costume. He also has won best director at the MTV Video Music Awards and a host of CLIO awards.

He also directed most of the videos for Green Day’s Grammy Award winning album “American Idiot”.

Bayer is following in the footsteps of other music video turned film directors David Fincher, McG, Michael Bay, and Francis Lawrence.  The Elm Street producers chose Bayer because they felt  strongly that he was ”the man to give their film a fresh visual look.”

Michael Bay’s production company Platinum Dunes is co-producing the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, which coincidentally celebrates it’s 25th anniversary this year.

How do you feel about Samuel Bayer as the man behind the new Nightmare?
