…As the first openly gay superhero! Woohoo! Nice one DC Comics! It’s about damn time we had some openly gay superheros as opposed to all those closeted ones.

DC Comics writer Greg Rucka told Comic Book Resources she was “a lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night”. Her appearance coincides with a battle in Gotham City to take over Batman’s cowl after he was seemingly killed off in November.

“We’ve been waiting to unlock her – it’s long overdue,” Rucka said. “Yes, she’s a lesbian. She’s also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character. If people are going to have problems with it, that’s their issue. That’s certainly not mine,” he added.

Batwoman was originally introduced to the series in 1956 as a potential love interest for Batman. Although, it wasn’t their love of bats that got in the way of their romance, it was her love for other women. She was outed by her creators in 2006 as a former lover of Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya. Now Batwoman will be appearing in the upcoming battle in Gotham City to take over Batman’s reign after he was seemingly killed off in November as an openly gay superhero. You go girl!

Although Batwoman was applauded for coming out, many people wonder if this is too much for mainstream audiences.

Rucka admitted the hero’s sexuality would cause some controversy saying: “I think there is going to be some media – I can’t control it…You’ve got to remember, Wonder Woman got a haircut and that became news. So it will be what it is. Our job is to make the best issues of Detective that we can.”

So! Now a new twist in the Batman 3 saga! Do you think that Christopher Nolan is brave enough or rather powerful enough to give the world it’s first gay superhero and still make box office magic? Come on Nolan! You can do it!

Check out a Batwoman trailer below…

Well we found out who she is alright! I think it helps that the first gay superhero is also a hot woman who will most likely be into other hot women. I think the next big step is outing Spiderman.

What do you think. Would you like to see a gay Batwoman in the next Batman film? Do you think audiences are ready?

huh? you said so yourself that Batwoman has been out for 2 years (I suppose 3) now. I read 52 and she was heavily involved in that series, why is this news now?

Actually Batwoman isn't the first, Northstar of the X men was. And after that was Apollo and Midnight who are married and have an adopted daughter. We probably shouldn't forget Hulking or Wiccan, or the Rawhide kid. So Marvel was definatly representing the gay comunity way before Catwoman.
DC did have Renee Montoya, a Gotham cop that was outed by two face came into her own recenlty in 2003.
