With all this talk about Kate Winslet in line to win an Oscar for The Reader a film about the Holocaust, I suddenly remembered Kate on “Extras” talking about how to win an Oscar, where I recalled her saying “I don’t think we really need another film about the Holocaust do we. It’s like how many have there been? You know, we get it. It was grim. Move on.”
You have to wait until about 3:45 minutes into it until she gets into the Oscar stuff, but trust me she’ll keep you entertained until then. And make sure you watch the end where she gives you one final tip on another good way to win an Oscar….
Now I mean no disrespect to Kate. First of all, The Reader as you can tell from my review, was one of my favorite films of the year because of how it handled the Holocaust and Kate’s performance was breathtaking. Secondly, the fact that she went on “Extras” and did this, shows that not only does she have an amazing sense of reality, but also a sense of humor about the Oscars.
It’s just SO amazing to hear her say:
“I don’t think we really need another film about the Holocaust do we. It’s like how many have there been? You know, we get it. It was grim. Move on. No, I’m doing it because I’ve noticed that if you do a film about the Holocaust, you’re guaranteed an Oscar. I’ve been nominated four times. Never won. And the whole world is going, ‘why hasn’t Kate won one.’ That’s it. That’s why I’m doing it. Schlinders ‘bloody’ List. The Pianist. Oscars coming out of their ass.”
Given her current circumstances. So I say, go Kate! I hope this film is your film! May the Holocaust finally bring you your Oscar!
