This morning I stumbled across some interesting casting news regarding the new “it” franchise, Twilight.  The film’s cast is sprinkled with former child stars who finally got their time to shine with more mature material. Therefore, wouldn’t it’s sequel New Moon be the perfect vehicle for another young lady to begin making her transition into more adult roles? According to EOnline, a source close to the film stated that Dakota Fanning might soon take a bite out of the film, by stepping into the role of “Jane”. Yep, you read that right!

More on Jane after the jump.

Jane is a member of Italy’s Volturi, the most deadly group of bloodsucking killers in author Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling series. Jane is described as a petite blonde with a “Botticelli angel-like face…[and] crimson irises.” While fellow Volturi guards Demetri & Felix “are three times the size of her, they are terrified of her.”

Also, according to this “source”, Fanning didn’t even have to audition for the role, it was just handed to her. They say the actress is currently in negotiations to star as we speak. I will agree Fanning does physically fit the profile of the character, and she can act, but I wonder if people will be able to get over the fact that she’s, you know… Dakota Fanning? Twilight for the most part was filled with unknown actors, which I think helped the film in a way.

As for Fanning’s youth, she will be turning 15 next month, so it’s not like she’s that far off in age compared to the other cast members. She’s just two years younger than Taylor Lautner aka Jacob Black.

What do you think? Is Fanning a smart casting decision, or a risky publicity stunt?
