Samuel L. Jackson is not an ‘Avenger’
By Krystal Clark
This is a sad, sad day for me. I came across an article in the LATimes where actor Samuel L. Jackson debunks some rumors regarding his role as Nick Fury in The Avengers movie. Jackson made a cameo at the end of Iron Man as Fury, an agent from the ultra secret organization S.H.I.E.L.D. When speaking about his character’s return for any future Marvel films, Jackson didn’t sound too optimistic.
More on Fury after the jump.
There was a huge kind of negotiation that broke down. I don’t know. Maybe I won’t be Nick Fury. Maybe somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won’t be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they're saying to me], ‘We’re not making that deal.’”
I called Marvel Comics and they gave me a statement that suggested that they still want to see Jackson wearing the eyepatch. “Marvel does not comment on active negotiations,” was the boilerplate response, but there was that emphasis on the word “active” in the voice of the spokesman who phoned me back.
This is just all kinds of wrong. How can Jackson not be a part of the Avengers movie? It doesn’t make any sense. What burns the most, is that when Marvel created their Ultimate Universe, the Nick Fury character was redrawn and modeled after Samuel L. Jackson. What happened here?
Do you think the Avengers movie can stay true to the comic, without the Nick Fury character?

What Marvel needs to do is 1. obviously continue their current productions but more importantly 2. sit down in a room and lock the door for a week. Order chinese food, get some cots and seriously think about the future of the Marvel world. It seemed as though they had a plan to slowly introduce new characters and have them branch out. They need a concrete plan in order to succeed. I'm tired of comic book character reboots after unsuccessful attempts only 4 years later. Make it right the first time.

Iron Man is the first step for an Avengers movie and they're already stumbling? True Jackson's appearance was at the end and may have been missed by the majority of viewers, so it may not have that big of an impact. The problem though, as toorandom points out, is that it's a worrying sign of how the planning is going for a project as big as what the Avengers is being billed as. They're going to need to find a new Bruce Banner, Nick Fury and now this…it sucks the most because as a comic fan, seeing Ultimate Nick Fury as inspired by Samuel L. Jackson played by Samuel L. Jackson was almost as good as the joker card at the end of Batman Begins.
