I could be wrong, but I don't remember a single example of drug use in The Rum Diary, save for the liquor that was nearly ubiquitous. I'm hoping that Depp would find that as a deal breaker. As a close friend of Thompson, he knew Hunter regretted being personified by the drug-induced hype that followed the film adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The excesses of Thompson were a part of his character, and represented very little of what he actually stood for-- morality, patriotism and a deeper journalistic reach than anyone else of his time. The Rum Diary was a great book, and should stand on its own to satisfy audiences-- the screenplay shouldn't fabricate it with drug use to attempt to cash in on the post-theater popularity of Fear and Loathing...
